What is Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO and what does JDC-IO stand for?

  • Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO represents the personal martial arts journey of Ireneo “Eric” Olavides, who has formulated a style influenced by all of his previous teachers. JDC-IO stands for Jose Diaz Caballero (his teacher) and Ireneo Olavides.

When was it organized?

  • Officially Eskrima de Campo JDC-IO was organized in 2006.

What are the ‘roots’ of De Campo?  Is there any predecessor art?

  • The main influence is Grandmaster Jose D. Caballero’s art of De Campo Uno-Dos-Tres Orinihal.

Does the training involve doble baston, espada y daga, daga y daga, pangamut, dumog and other elements common in FMA?

  • These elements are common in all types of Filipino martial arts and Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO is no different however, the style specializes in using a single stick at long range.

Can youth, ladies, middle age and elderly people practice it?

  • Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO was designed for smaller and weaker practitioners that include young adults, women and elderly people.

Teaching children (18 and younger) is at the descretion of the coaches.

  • Trainees under the age of eighteen (18) will need parental consent.

Does it demand a lot of physical energy in such a short time?

  • No, physical strength and conditioning are attributes that can be developed over time.

Are there katas or sayaw or forms in De Campo?

  • There are no katas or sayaws that are commonly found in other styles of FMA. We consider all movements to be forms or patterns in some sense.

How do I join? What is expected for a new student?

  • In order to join you will need to contact us through the contact page. Your email will then be directed to the appropriate person who will contact you shortly.
  • The new student is expected to undergo a probationary period in order to assess their character and to see if it coincides with our groups’ ideal students.

Is it necessary to have some background in Martial Arts to be able to join?

  • NO, it is not necessary to have a background in other arts to join. Some may find it hard to adapt to Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO’s principles but like all things, “practice makes perfect”

Can I cross-train in other Martial Arts?

  • We do not advise that a students cross train with other arts. (Especially other stick arts). The reason behind this is there is certain characteristics in striking that cannot be developed if contradicting principles confuses the mind and body.

Do you do join competitions?  Do you practice Juego Todo?

  • Currently, we do not join in any type of competitions or tournaments.
  • "Juego todo" matches were banned many years ago so no, we do not practice this form of competition.

How much does it cost me to train?  Do you have a standard training uniform?

  • The cost of training is at the discretion of the coach in your area. A standard price has been established and can be discussed with the coach.There is no prescribed uniform per se. A t-shirt and comfortable clothing is suggested. Also a group shirt will be mandatory when one becomes available.

Are there any gears or equipments required for the training?

  • It is highly recommended that you have your own sticks to practice with during sessions and more importantly at home. Some gear will be made available for specialized lessons. (i.e sparring)
  • Comfortable clothing (perferably sweats and t-shirt)
  • Rattan Sticks (one pair)
  • Padded sticks
  • Training knife
  • Goggles (eye protection)

How long will it take me to obtain a black belt in Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO?

  • Technically speaking there is no belt system in Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO however a ranking system has been put in place to help students track their progression through the system. There are seven levels within the system and each level varies on how long they take.

What is the requirement to be able to teach in your system?  Who are allowed to teach?

  • In order to qualify to teach the system one must undergo rigorous training to assure the high standards are kept when teaching.
  • Authorization from the founder and/or the Senoir members is required.

How frequent are the grading exams in De Campo JDC-IO? Who conducts these exams?

  • Depending on the dedication of the student, grading exams is conducted at the end of each level. Ideally, the highest-ranking coach will conduct the exam.

How do I start an Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO study group in my area?

  • In order to start a study group, we ask that you contact us and express your interest in starting a group. We can then discuss the next step.

Do you have DVD's and books?   Do you accept distance learning?

  • We do not currently have a plan for any DVD or books that will teach the system out right. This because we feel that paying special attention to each student is important for the system to be taught with high standards.

Does Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO have other chapters and is it affiliated with an umbrella organization recognized by the Philippine government?

  • NO at this time. 

Is Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (or SEC) in the Philippines?

  • Yes, Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO was registered in 2006.
